Sea Titan Masterpiece
This mosaic masterpiece was completed by Munir Habib in 2025 and represents the finest stonework and artistry in the world— in one square inch, one may find up to 36 hand cut tesserae.
Munir’s inspiration for this piece originates from an ancient mosaic of Tethys in the Shahba Museum, dating to 4th century AD. It is located in the ancient southwestern Syrian city of Shahba.
Made up of over 20,000 tesserae with nearly 20 different colored natural Mediterranean stone, the mosaic depicts the Greek Titan Goddess Tethys, the personification of the sea. She was married to Oceanus, God of the earth-encircling River Okeanos, the source of all the Earth’s freshwater. Together, they controlled all the water on Earth.
Like the other Titans, she was a child of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (Earth). She and the others ruled the Earth before they were defeated by their own children, including Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, and imprisoned to eternity to Tartarus, the infernal depths of the underworld.
The piece is vibrant, filled with a deep, rich color palette. Snakes, fish, and seaweed entangle one another to make up her hair, depicting her prominence as the pre-Olympian titan sea goddess. Her rosy cheeks and chin emphasize her feminine features.
